Led by Author, Journalist, & Writing Coach Liza Monroy and Experience Designer, Host, and Writer Emillio Mesa

About:

Writing is a solitary act but we are bolstered by creating in community. What we love about camp is the same thing we love about writing: play. Storytelling. Communing with like-minded explorers. While we cannot force inspiration, we can create ideal conditions for creativity to flourish.

If you’re passionate about telling a story, or even deciding which story to tell, you can’t hide any facet of your truth from your readers. On this retreat, we celebrate the art of vulnerability, which, like an instrument, must be tuned and practiced for when we meet the page, in order to realize the fullest potential of the work.

Delve into the tale(s) you’re burning to tell. Tap into your authentic voice. Work on your project in close community on this small, generative, and connective retreat, capped at just 8-10 supportive people who write, housed in an intimate setting under the guidance of an author with over a decade of experience leading workshops and consulting with writers to launch, finish, and improve projects. Celebrated hospitality expert (who is also a well-published essayist!) Emillio Mesa, one of San Francisco’s top-ranked private chefs per TripAdvisor, has curated all other aspects of the experience.

Over the course of the weekend, we balance movement and stillness, practical knowledge, and generative exercises both on and off your keyboard or paper. The luxury of undisturbed yet well-structured creative time in a beautiful setting brings your work to next-level fruition.

Off the page, Move Your Muse Writers’ Camp is hosted by Emillio. From a welcome Muse Punch to farm-to-table dishes featuring vegan/plant-based, gluten-free, and carnivorous options, Emillio has custom crafted an experience designed not only to deliver you to creativity’s door, but ensure you’re granted the warmest welcome in.

Movement, meditation, and play open the channels. Ample writing time—structured and free—throughout the experience guarantees you’ll leave with fresh pages (and perspectives) and a plan.

Embrace your vocation on a recharging creation vacation. Unlock your creative mind. Distill your vision. WRITE.

*Writers of memoir, personal essay, life-writing, roman-a-clef fiction, drama, screenplay, and stories will find our work together most relevant, though other genres are welcomed. *Experience level: whether you’re working on your first story or are a published author of ten books, established, aspiring, and emerging writers all benefit.

Our Venue:

Moss Beach, a one-of-a-kind location on California’s Central Coast, is only half an hour south of San Francisco along breathtaking Highway 1. A microclimate featuring stunning beaches dotted with harbor seals, Moss Beach boasts naturally dramatic scenery: a mysterious whispering cypress forest, a reportedly haunted distillery, and tucked-away, cozy, private, and quiet Writers’ Camp Beach House where the retreat is centered, designed with inspiration in mind. We will truly be present with and for ourselves and each other.

“Enter as strangers, leave as friends.” –Emillio

Liza also has 20 years of experience in yoga, a decade in the Brazilian martial art capoeira (she recently received her teacher’s belt), and is a certified Zumba instructor. Having resided in the intellectual, brain-based world of academia and traditional writing workshops that emphasize critique (and lots of hours sitting), she learned the fundamental necessity of creative movement practice and meditation for the writer’s mind. She interweaves all of these aspects into writing ritual for extracting the best in students’ process and work.

FAQ

Will my pages be critiqued?

Not during this retreat. It’s designed to be a generative, judgment-free experience. There will be optional time for sharing and soliciting feedback if/as desired.

What will we be doing?

We’ll engage in various rituals to prepare us for writing – meditation, yoga, haunted ocean distillery/former speakeasy, forest walk, a few surprises – as well as the writing itself. Blocks of designated time are devoted to working on projects, with prompts as well as free. We have created time and space for being in nature, seeking inspiration off the page, and bringing newfound ideas to the page, immersing yourself in your creative process + project.

Will Liza read my book and tell me what to do next?

After the retreat, Liza can take you on as a client at a steeply discounted rate – at which time she provides all of those editorial services

Can you hook me up with your agent/publisher/find me the love of my life?

Quite possibly. Let’s talk!
